What is Craniosacral Therapy?

“The Craniosacral system has a powerful influence over the nervous, endocrine and immune systems and a total body effect. It is also characterised by a palpable, rhythmic activity that persists throughout life” – Dr John Upledger

Craniosacral (CST) was pioneered and developed by John E. Upledger after extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University. It is a light-touch, manual therapy that releases tensions and restrictions held deep in the body and can relieve pain, dysfunctions and stress as well as improving overall health and homeostasis (physiological balance).

By facilitating the body’s natural and innate healing processes, CST can provide release and support to the whole body and has been shown to improve the functioning and regulation of the nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body, such as digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and more and can be beneficial for people of all ages seeking help with a wide range of healthcare challenges and symptoms – see more details below.

The Body remembers what the Mind forgets

CST can also facilitate awareness and release of emotional energies lodged in the soma (tissues) of the body and related conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress, depression and anxiety – a result known as Somatic Emotional Release (SER).

What Can I Expect During a CST Treatment Session?

A CST session will last around an hour (including a full-consultation during your first appointment) and is performed with the client fully-clothed and lying on a comfortable massage table. Using a light touch on the body and head, I evaluate and ‘listen’ to your body for tension patterns, restrictions and imbalances. I will then spend time on the relevant areas and facilitate signs of release and re-balance.
