Mindful Movement & Meditation in Incredible India!

10-day Tai Chi & Yoga Retreat 25th April- 5th May 2023 in Delhi, Agra and Dharamsala.

“India is the beating-heart of the world and the Himalayas are the heavens of that heart!” – Michelle Gupta!

ONLY FOUR PLACES LEFT!! Don’t miss out on the “trip of a lifetime”! Pay your deposit at the bottom of the page.

Retreat fee: €957pp – see below for what this includes.

All welcome – no experience necessary!

I am delighted and excited to invite you to join me ‘on top of the world’ for the trip of a lifetime to incredible India!

Our magical, 10-day Indian holistic holiday includes 3 nights in Delhi and Agra visiting one of the stunning seven wonders of the world – the Taj Mahal – and the ancient site of Fatehpur Sikri. Followed by 7 nights in Himalayan Dharamsala – home of the Dalai Lama – where we’ll enjoy mindful movement and mediation, ancient spiritual cultures, nutritious and delicious food, majestic scenery and mingle with monks and monkeys!

I have Indian heritage – I’m a ‘Gupta’ – my Dad’s family are Bengalis from Assam – and back in the 3rd century there was even a Gupta Dynasty in India ruled by Gupta Kings! So I have a deeply personal connection with this amazing country.

Around 25 years ago I made my first visit to India and was instantly hooked by this vibrant, multi-cultural and spiritual country. I have since been back many times and, during my 6th visit, at the end of 2016, I stayed in Mcleodganj nr Dharamsala for the first time. Having engaged with Buddhist practices for the last 10 years, I was keen to visit the home of HH the Dalai Lama for the last 60 years. Little did I know that I would be so utterly captivated by this very special, welcoming town, its people and its unique spiritual heritage plus Ram’s guesthouse – not to mention the majestic Himalayan mountains from every angle!

Subsequently, I took a group to Mcleodganj in October 2019 and it was a life-changing experience for my guests and a dream come true for me! I am beside myself with excitement to not only be able to plan a return trip to ‘the roof of the world’ but also to include visits to the Taj Mahal and the ancient site Fatehpur Sikri.

Here’s what Allan, one of my guests in 2019, had to say about our amazing adventure!

Fantastic Taichi retreat and holiday with Michelle Gupta! Michelle taught Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Meditation each day. We also had yoga with a local teacher. She is a phenomenal hostess and every day was varied, exciting and very entertaining.

She organised great local cultural excursions to Buddhist centres, temples, ancient Indian forts and ayurvedic cooking demos.

The accommodation “Rams Place” was excellent and catered to Western needs.

The other guests on the retreat were great fun and the village where we stayed, Mcleod Ganj, offered a huge variety of shops, markets, cafes and His Holiness The Dalai Lama’s Temple.

All with views of the Himalayas…….a trip of a life time. Namaste Michelle!” {Allan Nov 2019 and 2 of his many photos below!}

RAM YOGA HOUSE and MCLEOD GANJ – introducing our host and venue in Mcleodganj, Dharamsala.

Following our 3-day trip to Delhi and Agra, we’ll be based in the holy and historic town of Mcleod Ganj, near Dharamsala, India – home for the past 60 years to HH The Dalai Lama. It’s a magical melting-pot of ancient cultures where you can mingle with monks, Indian locals, and Tibetans who live in harmony and who practice and protect ancient Buddhist and Hindu traditions.

McLeod Ganj has an average elevation of 2,100 metres (6,800 feet) is dwarfed by the panoramic Dhauladhar Range of the Himalayan foothills. Below us is the Kangra Valley and the bustling city of Dharamsala.

There’ll be plenty of time to visit the local temples, cultural centres and museums, shops, Western, Indian and Tibetan restaurants and there will also be a choice of optional, free and paid excursions eg. to the Dalai Lama’s Temple complex, a forest and lake walk, visit to a historical fort and ruins, a night-time fire ceremony, a visit to a Tibetan cultural and crafts centre.

Our base and sanctuary for the week – guesthouse ‘Ram Yoga House’ – with its own rooftop yoga studio overlooking the Himalayas and a lovely cafe serving fabulous Indian and Western/European breakfasts, lunches and evening meals – is just a 5 minute walk from the amazing atmosphere, sights and smells of this holy, Himalayan town. Here, we’ll soak up the breathtaking mountain views from our balconies and the rooftop Yoga studio during our daily Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Yoga and Meditation classes.  No experience is necessary and you can take all our classes at your own pace as you’ll have a whole week to immerse yourself in this special environment.

Meet Ram Bhardwaj – Guesthouse owner “Ram Yoga House”,  Ayurvedic Teacher and Thai Yoga Massage Therapist :

Ram was born in a village near Dharamsala and has been an Ayurvedic and Yoga practitioner and Massage therapist for many years having trained and taught workshops and courses all over the world, as well as in his hometown.

Ram Yoga House: Our retreat venue is Ram’s award-winning guesthouse, the  winner of the booking.com 2018 Guest Review award with a review score of 8.3! In addition to facilities mentioned above there is free wifi. All towels and bedding are also provided in your en-suite room.

There will be DAILY TAI CHI, YOGA AND MEDITATION classes all held in the rooftop yoga studio with its breathtaking Himalayan backdrop.

Our Yoga classes: Ram has practiced Yoga from an early age and employs a highly experienced Yoga Instructor, Sunny,  at his fully-equipped roof-top studio. He offers classes all year round and as India is, after all, the original home of Yoga and we’ll be in very good hands! Rest assured that Ram will ensure our classes are suitable for beginners so you can take it at your own pace and build on your experience during the week.  His guesthouse also boasts a lovely cafe where cook, Nilesh, serves healthy Indian and Western breakfasts and lunches, as well as hot and cold drinks. (You can eat very well there for around ¢5-6 a day!).

Ayurveda – Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of health and wellness and includes the principles of diet, exercise (Yoga) and spiritual practice such as meditation. Ayur means “knowledge” / veda means “life”. NB. There will be opportunities to have one-to-one Thai Yoga Massage sessions with Ram.

Here’s a 50 second video made by our guesthouse owner, Ram, in Jan 2019 highlighting what you can see from his guesthouse, our venue for the week – including the Himalayas, the Dalai Lama’s home and the rooftop-hopping monkeys! Plus a video of myself doimg Tai Chi when in the Himalayas near Sikkim in 2016!

– Visit to the Dalai Lama’s temple and grounds – free / 15 mins walk / museum has a small fee.

– local Buddhist temple – free/ 10 mins walk

– Trek to Triund and Guna Devi Temple – an exciting trek with our yoga instructor and local hill-walking expert, Sunny. This trek is suitable for beginners and is approx 3-4 hours round trip. We will be walking through the foothills of this Himalayan region and past a river to the ruins of the ancient Guna Devi Temple. Here we will have lunch and enjoy a Yoga and Tai Chi workshop before walking back to Ram’s. Approx ¢30pp incl lunch.

– Local Ayurvedic massage – there are a number of excellent and experienced massage therapists in the local area that I can recommend prices are approx €20 per hour.

TRAVEL & TRANSFERS :

Info last updated end November 2022:

RE: International flights to and from Delhi:

Following my recent visit to India, Mcleod Ganj and Ram Yopa House I did my research and booked my flights for next year! Based on this, below are my recommendations, advice and suggestions regarding your international flights to and from Delhi. I am flying from Cork in Ireland and below will apply to you if flying from Cork, Dublin or London.

Naturally, it is totally your choice who you fly with but it would be great if flight times could be as closely co-ordinated as possible especially for the outbound flights to Delhi. Return flights are more flexible and I know some of you wish may to stay on and venture further after our retreat.  As of end Dec 2022, guests have booked flights to Delhi via Heathrow with various airlines eg. as shown below with Virgin (& Aerlingus from Ireland), with BA (and Aerlingus) and also with Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul) as per the update below.

NB. In 2019, the whole group, including myself, flew with Virgin Atlantic (partnering with Aerlingus from Ireland) and some of us returned on different days / stayed on for extra nights.

Having just booked my own flights from Cork as shown below it seems that Virgin are the best option again and I was very pleasantly surprised to pay only €750 Euro return (via Trailfinders) which was the same price as 2019!

You can book either ONLINE – my recommendation would be to use Expedia as they have a fairly good customer services department and also are usually v transparent and clear about what is included in their flight deals. NB. You won’t get the same prices or the connecting flights from Dublin/Cork if you go direct to Virgin’s website.

Or IN-PERSON/ ON THE PHONE – I recommend using Trailfinders and I will most likely book my flights with them. And especially if you would like to chat to a ‘human’ about your booking and clarify things either in person at one of their branches (open 7-days a week) or on the phone. They, again, are very clear about what is included and can also offer travel insurance. They have branches in Cork, Dublin, Limerick and various locations in the UK. Here’s the Irish website link  https://www.trailfinders.ie/

IMPORTANT INFO:

IMPORTANT FLIGHT INFO: You will need to allow ONE WHOLE DAY AND NIGHT for travel to and from India at each end of  the holiday…….

  • OUTWARD to Delhi – Arrival day in Delhi is Tuesday 25th April 2023 – please note that the majority of international flights from UK/Ireland/Europe to India fly overnight and arrive the DAY AFTER DEPARTURE so you will most likely need to depart from your home country on Monday 24th April.
  • DOMESTIC FLIGHTS – from Delhi to Dharamsala return with Spicejet. Dates will be Delhi-Dharamsala Fri 28th April / Dharamsala – Delhi Friday 5th May.
  • RETURN: You will need to book your international flight home to depart either very late on Friday 5th May or on Saturday 6th May. Our retreat ends on Friday 5th May and you will fly from Dharamsala to Delhi on this day. It is usually too tight for time to then catch your international flight home on the same day from Delhi. Based on personal experience (and on the fact that Indian flights are VERY often delayed or even cancelled!) I never aim to get my domestic and international flights on the same day and always have a night in Delhi the day beforehand.
  • You’ll see highlighted in red below, I’m suggesting for all guests to get the SAME FLIGHT from Heathrow to Delhi  this is shown below via Cork and Dublin. It’s quite important that your arrival times in Delhi are as close together as possible. Return flights are more flexible as some of you may stay on. I’m planning to get the return flight shown below (back to Cork).
  • Pricing – Below I’ve specified the prices as of end Nov 2022 – all subject to change/increases of course. They vary between €701 – €751 Euro depending on your start point and whether you book online or with Trailfinders. These prices are very good – I paid nearly €1100 for my trip last month! (with Qatar Airways via Doha).
  • ALL of the below flights are managed by Virgin with sections from Ireland operated by Aerlingus. So you will check-in at the Aerlingus desk in Cork/ Dublin and receive boarding passes from Ireland all the way through to Delhi. You will need to transfer between terminals at Heathrow (it’s really easy!) and no need to collect your luggage as it will go all the way to Delhi. The flights below allow ample transfer time.
  • Baggage allowance – a huge amount of baggage is included for all flights! 10kg cabin-baggage / 2-pieces of check-in baggage 23kg each!! This means you can do loads of shopping! You could put a foldable holdall in your case (or buy one v cheaply out in India) for all your goodies!
  • Date-change fees – be aware that Virgin charge €150 for date changes (plus any extra cost for your new flights). Trailfinders charge an additional €50 admin fee. So if you’re staying on for extra days pls be sure of your dates before booking!! Feel free to arrange a chat with me if you want to explore options for extra days.
  • Domestic flights from Delhi to Dharamsala (after Agra) – I’m suggesting that we book these in the New Year but it’s up to you. Again, we need to co-ordinate flights as closely as poss on the way to Dharamsala on 28th April but coming back to Delhi on 5th May is more flexble. Allow approximately €200-300 Euro return plus any excess luggage costs.

OFFICIAL LINK >>

Please make sure you have a minimum of 6 months validity on your passport from after your return date.
And if you think you might be returning to India and would like a 12-month visa do have a look at this page. Again you can apply online.

Visa costs vary according to the country of origin of your passport.

  • Transfers by car from Delhi and Dharamsala airports – These are included in your retreat fee.

TRAVEL INSURANCE, HEALTH & WEATHER :

  • You will need to arrange your own travel insurance in advance of travelling to India – see T&C’s below.
  • Covid and travel to India – information last updated October 2022 – as per the Irish Dept of Foreign Affairs “There are no COVID-19 restrictions in place for travel to India. There is no requirement to present certificates of vaccination/testing for COVID-19 or to complete a self-declaration form. However, passengers may be subject to medical screening on arrival.” Link to this website for further details >> https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/india/
  • Malaria – it’s not generally deemed necessary to take anti-malarial tablets in the Northern Indian region we’re staying in. However, we advise that you bring mosquito repellent for use after dusk (see below my all-natural, tried and tested recipe for homemade mozzie spray!) if in doubt, see the India Malaria map below and contact your local travel-health clinic. >

https://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/asia-east/india/india-malaria-map

  • Other immunisations – you may wish to consult your local travel-health clinic to check if you need any immunisations / jabs before travelling to Northern India.
  • Weather – temperatures around end April/early May should be a very pleasant average of 20 degrees, possibly as high as 25 degrees and down to 12-15 degrees at night. As mentioned below – layers are the key when packing clothing! Little or no rain is expected as it will be well before the rainy season.
  • Drinking water – You must never EVER drink the tap water- not even to brush your teeth!! However – please bring a REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLE – not only is this very useful for all of your flights (as all  airports have drinking water refill stations and, naturally, the long-haul airline will happily refill your bottle as often as you like) but Ram has a reverse-osmosis water filter and you can refill for free at his place. It’s likely we will use bottled water in Delhi and Agra.

WHAT TO BRING & FAQ’S

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list but here are our suggestions to help make this an amazing and comfortable experience for everyone –

  • Cash is handy to have in Euros, GBP or USD. Exchange rate as of Nov 2022 is €1 Euro = 80 INR (Indian Rupees). It is usually not possible to obtain INR outside India but there are plenty of exchange bureaus and cash machines at Delhi airport when you arrive and also atm’s in Mcleod Ganj. Not many local restaurants or cafes will take card payments but a number of shops will. NB. Personal expenses and food/drinks are not included in your retreat fee (except for breakfast at the hotels x3 nights in Delhi and Agra). Nor are paid, optional excursions. A daily budget of €25-30 is suggested for food and drinks and should be more than ample and you can pay Ram at the end of our stay by card if you wish for a small fee.
  • Sunscreen / sunhat
  • A torch
  • Mosquito repellent and bite cream / antihistamines.
Here’s my recipe for homemade, tried and tested mozzie spray that is totally natural and kind to your skin: Mix the following in a spray bottle and shake well before use: Per 100ml = 50ml pre-boiled water, 25ml witch hazel, 1tsp liquid oil eg. Jojoba. Essential oils : Citronella x40 drops / Tea tree x10 drops / Lavender x10 drops. You can also add Lemongrass OR Eucalyptus x10 drops.
  • A wrap / layers for the evenings as it can get chilly at night
  • Your own preferred teabags and snacks etc
  • Sturdy shoes/runners
  • Plug adaptors for India
  • Immodium and Dioralyte incase you get an upset tummy!
  • Women are advised to bring their own tampons as required as they are not readily available in India.

DISABLED FACILITIES: Due to the location and landscape, this retreat is not suitable for those in wheelchairs or who are immobile.
